History of Tashiding Monastery

There are many legends associated with the monastery. One such legend claims that the Tashiding hill is the navel point of all the holy places in the entire Sikkim. In the 8th century, there was a Buddhist Tantrayana Master, Guru Padmasambhava who visited this place along with his disciples and recognized it as ‘the heart of all the holy places’ in the region.

In 1995, due to multiple earthquakes, the walls of the monastery started giving up, and thus, the monastery had to be rebuilt in the same year. In doing so, the state government of Sikkim helped the monastery’s management financially.

There is folklore associated with this monastery too, which links it with the three Buddhist monks who crowned the first King of Sikkim. The ritual of crowing had taken place at Yuksom, which became the first capital of the entire kingdom of Sikkim.

As per the local beliefs, these monks had witnessed a powerful beam of light shooting from Kanchendzonga and then falling on a hill. The monks took it as a divine sign and built the Tashiding Monastery there.
