Organized by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development, this festival lets you enjoy a variety of activities and events that can be cherished lifelong. In fact, not just Yelagiri, Ooty also celebrates a similar summer festival, attracting thousands and lakhs of people every year.
Not just India, Yelagiri Summer Festival attracts tourists from all over the world. This festival is celebrated every year between the months of May and June. Handicraftsmen, artists, farmers, and village people, in hundreds, come together to showcase their products and talent.
Major Attractions of Yelagiri Festival
1. The Flower Show
One of the most popular shows of the Yelagiri Summer Festival is the Flower Show that showcases different flowers of the Nilgiri Region. About 250 exhibitors participate in the show. Here you will get to enjoy a quiet ambience and serene beauty of nature. Apart from the local flowers, they also exhibit international flowers, the most popular of them being Japanese Flower Arrangements. Also, different creative interpretation of flowers can be seen here. Flower rangoli, vegetable carvings, etc. are some of the examples.
2. Dog Show
It is organized by the South India Kennel Club at Government Art College where you get to meet several four-legged furballs. It is one of the most anticipated bits of Yelagiri Summer Festival. The event boasts a variety of dog breeds such as Pug, Bulldog, Beagle, Poodle, and whatnot!
3. Cultural programs
Another grand show that is completely magnificent is the cultural one which showcases dance and music programs of a different taste. This event leaves the audience mesmerized with folk dance and drama of students and professional artists, telling local stories through their performances.
4. The Rose Festival
The Rose Festival is another beautiful part of Yelagiri Summer Festival that one can experience. Held at Government Rose Garden, different roses are showcased in a myriad of ways. One can admire the tower of roses or Rangolis that is made of several colourful roses. Approximately 3000 varieties of roses can be seen at the event.
5. The Spice Show
Held in Saint Thomas Secondary School at Gudalur, the Yelagiri Summer Festival celebration runs for two days here. You get to see a range of locally-grown spices right from cardamoms to cinnamon. Also, they arrange beautiful food gift packs of these spices that you can give to your friends and family.
6. The Fruit Show
This one is organized by the Department of Horticulture and here, the fruit arrangements in different shapes are simply amazing. The show is displayed at Sim’s Park in Coonoor.
