Barot Valley is a mesmerizingly beautiful village located in the serene valleys of Mandi District in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is a newfound tourist destination and is located about 67 kilometres away from Mandi.

If you are a backpacker, this destination is perfect to backpack through for a day or so. The scenic landscapes are captivating, and the unpolluted air draws travellers from across the world for sightseeing and much more. The location is famous for its numerous trekking trails passing through the village and hence is a preferred trekking destination too.

However, this place is a literal hidden gem. Very few travellers know about Barot Valley and it’s mostly an unexplored and unexploited landscape. For the ones seeking a virgin travel destination, this is the place to be at - in the midst of the gorgeous state of Himachal Pradesh.

Talking about its natural beauty, we can safely say that anybody visiting Barot Valley will surely be awestruck by its scenic treat. This village, although small in size, has a wealth of beauty. The forests around the village are mostly Deodar and Oak that grow in abundance in the region and are home to a variety of flora and fauna. One can choose to walk through the woods nearby and experience the charm of the village growing with each step they take. History of Barot Valley Himachal Pradesh

The village of Barot came into the limelight when the Shanan Hydroelectric Project was proposed around 1920 in India. It was mainly to utilize the hydroelectric potential of River Uhl that gushes between Barot and Jogindernagar. It is since then that the village has also been considered as a tourist destination, but not many know about this place.

Major Attractions in and around Barot Valley Mandi

1. River Uhl. For the daring water-sport lovers, swimming in the pristine waters of River Uhl is highly recommended.

2. Bir Billing. It is about two hours away from Barot Valley. It is a preferred hub for paragliding to explore the great Himalayan Valleys from an altitude of about 8,000 feet above sea level.

3. Khir Ganga Ghat. After you have enjoyed the beautiful Barot Valley, you can head to the beautiful Khir Ganga Ghat which is another soothing place.  

4. Tashi Jong Khampagar Monastery. The monastery holds a healing power that makes one forget their pains and feel the divinity. If you ask us, it is one of the best places to visit near Barot Valley.

5. Camping. You can enjoy the weather and lush greenery of Barot Valley while camping on its banks.

6. Fishing. After exploring the Valley, you would love to try your hands at fishing that is very relaxing.

7. Rock Climbing. One can go rock-climbing on one of the hills and rejoice their achievement from atop before rappelling down to the base.

8. Trekking. You have not visited the place fully if you have not indulged in Barot Valley trek. Trekking in a hilly backdrop with oh-so pleasant and cool weather will give you the experience of a lifetime.

How to Reach Barot Valley

This beautiful place of north India is well-connected to local as well as national regions of India. It is located at a distance of around 492, 1,897, 2,027, 2,672 km from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, respectively. Below is the travel route information.

Air. Kangra Airport is the nearest airport. After reaching the airport, you can hire a bus service to reach the Barot Valley.

Rail. The nearest railway station is Kangra Mandir Railway Station. You can then take a bus from the station which might take approximately 3 hours to reach Barot Valley.

Road. The beautiful valley of Uhl, where Barot is located lies at a distance of 40 kilometres from the town of Jogindernagar and 66 kilometres from Mandi. One can avail public buses from Mandi, Jogindernagar, and Palampur to reach Barot. There also are frequent buses plying to Kothikodh, Bada Gran, and Luhardi that pass through Barot.
