The major reason being that this fort has some really intense nuances of history which have been associated with it throughout. And not just that, in the present time as well, some of the major blockbuster movies have been shot here. One such example is ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ which was loved by all one and all.  

Located by the Chapora River, this fort is a picturesque destination with some really amazing views to experience. Although it is in ruins, the scenic views which one can see from this fort are really amazing and are worth spending your precious time with your family and friends. 

History of Chapora Fort 

This fort was built in the 18th century and is situated at a distance of around 10km from Mapusa. It is also known by the name ‘Shahpura’ which literally means ‘town of the Shahs’. It is interesting to know that this fort has seen various rulers come and go in its lifetime till now. Once, while trying to end the Portuguese rule in Goa, Prince Akbar also had joined the hands of Maratha warriors who were practically his enemies. However, after recovering from the attacks of the Marathas and Mughals, the Portuguese people strengthened their defenses offering shelter to the locals. 

Across the Chapora river, the Hindu ruler of the Pernem, who was one of the sworn enemies of the Portuguese, successfully held the fort for two years after it fell to the hands of Marathas in 1719.

Chapora River. The Chapora river originates at Ramghat and enters Goa, flowing into the Arabian sea. It is interesting to know that in the 18th century, this river marked the boundaries between India and Portuguese Goa. 

Shahpura. The word Shahpura translates into the 'Town of the Shahs'. This place is an old site where the visitors come to explore this ancient monument. Alongside this, there are a few Muslim tombstones here as well.

Chapora Beach. It is about 10 km away from Mapusa featuring groves of coconut palms. The white sands of this beach offer some really interesting views. Even a simple casual walk at this beach will feel like total bliss.

Visit Vagator Beach. Located on the opposite bank of the Chapora river, this is the kind of beach which, once upon a time was quite famous amid the hippies. The overall surroundings here are very neat and clean. It is a peaceful place to enjoy some really good company.

Known as the ‘Rome of the East’ as well as the ‘Miami of India’, here people dress according to the tropical climatic conditions. In Goa, the catholic women dress in gowns and other western attires. However, the women belonging to the Hindu community wear the Nav-vari saree. Men prefer wearing urban and modern clothing.

The Goan cuisine comprises a delicious blend of Hindu, Portuguese and various other food.  

How to Reach Chapora Fort?

By Air. Goa International Airport is the nearest airport which is situated at a distance of around 43km from this place. It has very good connectivity with other cities such as Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, etc. 

By Road. The overall connectivity via road is also quite good. You can easily travel from major cities like Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, etc. 

By Train. The nearest railway station is Margao. It has very good connectivity via other major cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata. After deboarding the train you will have to take some means of transportation to reach your destination.
