Home to rare species of animals and birds, a place that has a perfect alliance with the landscape - this is what explains exactly what Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary actually is. It is located in the East Godavari District in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The sanctuary is also an estuary that comprises lush green landscapes and huge mangrove trees to look around. The wildlife sanctuary got its name from a village known as Coringa and is home to unique and endangered species of birds and animals. 

The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is open all days of the week except Tuesdays. The timings are from 9 am to 5 pm. Although the sanctuary observes pleasant weather throughout the year, yet one must plan a visit between October and March as it's not at all humid around this time. The only benefit if visiting the sanctuary this time is pleasant weather conditions that will let you explore the place to the fullest.

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise for nature and wildlife lovers. The rich biodiversity of this place got the status of a sanctuary in the year 1978. Coringa Sanctuary is spread in an area of 235.7 km. The local guides and the people claim that the sanctuary has more than 35 species of mangrove plants that belong to plant familia.

Tourists can enjoy a lot of therapeutic and adventurous activities such as fishing in the serene water of Godavari river or opting for boating, jet skiing, speed boating and more. Apart from these activities if you are interested in bird watching and animal watching then you will definitely encounter some rare species of birds and animals. If you get lucky you might also spot the endangered white-backed vulture and Oriental white ibis.

1. Bird Species. The sanctuary consists of a wide range of bird species. The number of species might be more than 120. If you like to watch birds then this is the place to be as you may spot birds such as flamingos, seagulls, white-backed vulture, and long-billed vulture, other birds like a painted stork, grey heron, little stint openbill stork and many more.

2. The Big Cat Family. The sanctuary is home to big cat genus like a lion, jaguar, and leopard. Visiting the sanctuary will give you the opportunity to spot these wild cats in action or lazing around in their den. 

3. Jeep Ride. Tourists can enjoy Jeep rides across the sanctuary while enjoying a magnificent view. The jeep ride will take you closer to this beautiful place with rich biodiversity where one would be able to explore and experience life in the wild.   

4. Boat Ride. Get on a boat for a thorough ride and explore India’s second-largest Mangrove forest in the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary. One may capture the enthralling scenic beauty of the place and can freeze that in one’s camera forever. 

How to Reach Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary

Coringa wildlife sanctuary is a place that is visited by nature and animal lovers from across the country. The dense forest, wooden bridges, and the never-seen-before species of plants and birds will surely amaze and mesmerise you. You can arrive in Kakinada via roadways, railways, and airways. From Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru you are required to cover a distance of approx. 1,800, 1,200, 1,000 and 900km respectively to reach the sanctuary. By Road. Travelling by road is a tiring task but not for the driving enthusiasts and if you wish to travel to the sanctuary by your own vehicle then here is a quick piece of information that will help you plan the itinerary from nearby cities.

  1. Visakhapatnam - 166 km via NH 16
  2. Guntur - 250km via NH 16
  3. Rajahmundry - 70 km via Kakinada Rajanagaram Road
  4. Vijayawada - 220 km via NH 16

By Rail. Kakinada railway station is the nearest railway station to reach Coringa Wildlife sanctuary. The railway station is just 15km away from the sanctuary and one may take a taxi to cover this distance. Goutami Express, Cocanada Express, and Circar Express are the popular trains in which one may make the reservation. Listed below are some other trains that you may consider if arriving from the metro or the nearby cities.

By Air. Rajahmundry Airport is the nearest airport to the sanctuary. From the airport, one has to travel a distance of 70km to reach the sanctuary which one may cover by a public bus or taxi. Rajahmundry airport receives connecting flights from Visakhapatnam airport. IndiGo airlines run direct flights from Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Chennai to Rajahmundry Airport.
