The town of Bishnupur was ruled by the kings of Gupta period. And for about a thousand years, it remained the capital of Malla Kings of Mallabhum of which Bankura was a part till their power waned and the Mughal kings saw their rise.
However, it was during the rule of Malla King Veer Hambir and his successors like Raja Raghunath Singha Dev and Bir Singha Dev that Bishnupur was recognized as one of the principal centres of cultural immensity in Bengal. It was also in this time that most of the exquisite terracotta temples were built.
This is considered to be one of the oldest brick temples established by Malla King Bir Hambir in the year 1600 CE. Moreover, this temple also has one more inner chamber which houses the idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. Visiting this temple can be an exclusive experience for many, especially the devotees of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha.
