This place is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Karnataka. The Shivanasamudra island town is located on the banks of the Kaveri or Cauvery river and divides the river into two twin waterfalls named as Gaganachukki and Barachukki. Tourists from all over the country arrive here to witness the picturesque view of these twin waterfalls. This small island town is in the Mandya area of Karnataka. Shivanasamudra is also the place where Asia's first hydroelectric power station was set up in 1905.

History of Shivanasamudra Falls

The name Shivanasamudra literally means Shiva’s sea. Shivanasamudra is situated 65 km east of Mysore and 120 km away from Bengaluru. The region has been encompassed by forested hills and lavish green valleys. The Cauvery river finds its way through the Deccan Plateau and drops downstream to form the lovely twin waterfalls.

It is believed that the western stream is known as Gaganachukki while the eastern one is known as Bharachukki. Gaganachukki falls down from the height of 98 meters with the greatest stream of 667,000 cubic feet per second. Bharachukki is one km far from the Gaganachukki Fall and the falling edge of Bharachukki is somewhat more extensive than that of Gaganachukki. The rivers here are very solid and the valley is very deep. Accordingly, swimming isn't permitted here because of safety concerns.
