The birthplace of many renowned freedom fighters, intellectuals, poets and politicians, Chikmagalur was once represented by Indira Gandhi in the Indian Parliament.
Also reckoned with the establishment of Hoysala dynasty, their legacy is reflected through the Amrutheshwara temple in Tarikere district which was built by the king of Hoysala dominion.
Chikmagalur also has a deep affinity with coffee cult in India as it is believed that the first coffee crop grown in India was in the Baba Budangiri hills in 1670. According to legends, Baba Budan discovered coffee on his way to Mecca whilst crossing the seaport of Mocha, Yemen. From there, he brought seven coffee beans and planted them in the hills of Chikmagalur in order to introduce coffee to the country. Later, Britishers elevated coffee production in the region and turned it into a primary occupation of the town. No wonder, today Chikmagalur is famous as ‘the coffee land of India’.
