Auli, a hill station-turned-ski destination situated in Uttarakhand, India, is surrounded by lush oak trees, apple orchids, and pine trees. Apart from being home to different types of flora and fauna, it is home to several adventurous activities such as skiing, trekking, camping and many more.

In the north of Auli, there is Badrinath Temple which is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus.

History of Auli

It is believed that the famous Adi Guru Shankaracharya visited here in the 8th century. The Joshimath Temple is built by him only which is of great significance even till now. 

Also, it's known for local tribes named Khatauli which is originally from a semi-nomadic tribe named Bhotiya Tribe which is believed to have migrated from Mongolia. 

Top Attractions in and Around Auli

Gorson Bugyal. Situated at a height of 3,056 above sea level, it is a picturesque location where one can enjoy the view of Nanda Devi and Trishul. it will just take 3 kilometers of trekking from Auli hill station to this destination to witness this beauty. 

Kwani Bugyal. It is situated at an altitude of 3300 meters from the sea level. 12 kilometers away from Gorson Bugyal, this place is considered to be extremely apt for trekkers. It comes in between the trekking route of Joshimath-Auli-Gurso Bugyal-Kwani Bugyal. It is also a great place to camp and enjoy in the lap of nature. 

Chenab Lake. Witnessing lesser footfall, the beautiful place owes the magnificent beauty and tranquil atmosphere to keep you in awe. The beautiful villages amid lush green trees and plants are alluring for tourists. 

Trishul Peak. One of the most popular Auli tourist places is Trishul Paek which is formed by three Himalayan mountain peaks in the western Kumaun. It is situated at a height of 7,120 meters from the sea level. 

Joshimath. It is one of the integral pilgrimage destinations of India which boasts several Hindu temples founded by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. While it is of religious importance primarily, Joshimath is a popular tourist destination too. 

Activities to Do in Auli

Trekking. Kwani Bugyal is one of the best destinations for trekking. While you are trekking towards Kwani Bugyal, you will get to explore beautiful meadows that are surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks. 

Skiing. Auli is best known for skiing activities. The snow-capped areas allow you to enjoy skiing and spend some fun and adventurous time. Though, tourists can enjoy the mountain bike trails as well.

Cable Car Ride. Cable car riding is locally known as Gondola. Experiencing a cable car ride can be an exciting moment to cherish. Auli has the highest and longest cable car ride in Asia after Gulmarg covering the distance of 4 kilometers, starting from Joshimath. 

Camping. Camping on the banks of Auli Lake is everything. Sitting around the bonfire, having delicious food while enjoying special moments with your friends and loved ones is the best thing to do here.  

Best Time  to Visit Auli

One can schedule his/her trip between the months of December to February to enjoy snow-capped mountains. Also, if you want to skip the humid summer of India, then too, you can head here during the months of May and June.

The autumn here is also very beautiful and pleasant. So, it will be best to book your tickets for Auli Trip between the months of July to September.

How to Reach Auli

Auli is one of the most picturesque hill stations of India, hence, you ought to visit it at least once in your lifetime. Here are different ways to reach this destination. 

By Air. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport or Dehradun Airport in Dehradun. There are several renowned airline services like  Air India, Air Heritage, Alliance Air, IndiGo that connect metropolitan cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru to the hill station. The airport is well-served via road connectivity for easy accessibility. Several buses run from the airport to Joshimath. Once you reach Joshimath, you need to take roadway or ropeways to reach Auli. 

By Rail. Haridwar Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Auli which is approximately 193 kilometers away from the hill station. There are frequent trains such as Nanda Devi EXP, Haridwar EXP, Doon EXP  that connect Rishikesh to metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata respectively. Apart from this, Dehradun Railway Station and Rishikesh Railway Station are other nearest railheads that are well-connected within Uttarakhand and other cities of India. 

By Road. You are required to catch a bus or taxi to Joshimath in order to reach Auli. Joshimath is well-connected from the major cities of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haridwar. Buses are also available from Delhi to Joshimath. From Joshimath, Auli lies at a distance of 10 km and you need to cover this distance by ropeway or by road.
