History of Meerut

Meerut finds its mention in the history books too, as it was closely related to the watershed event of the Revolt of 1857. The event was the outcome of an incident that happened on April 12th of 1857. As per the ancient documents, 85 cavalrymen refused to touch and use the cartridges made from animal fat. This refusal led to the imprisonment of all the 85 cavalrymen. This penalization led to the first and the most significant revolt against British rule.
