Kabir Das is a celebrated Indian mystic, saint, and poet who is a well-known name of Indian history, culture, and literature. Kabir Das was born in the 15th century in Varanasi and believed to be brought up by a Muslim family of weavers. Though it is not clear how and when Kabir Das got inclined towards spiritualism but according to the popular belief his spiritual journey started when he came across the renowned Bhakti saint Swami Ramananda in Varanasi. 

Kabir Das completed his spiritual training under Swami Ramananda and later rose to popularity for devising his distinct ideology, teachings, and classic literary works. Kabir Das is also known to be the forerunner of the Bhakti movement. He was a preacher of Hindu-Muslim unity and denounced caste categorization and idol worshipping. Like him, music too is all about inclusiveness and the Mahindra Kabira Festival is an initiative to relive and revive Kabir Das who itself is a philosophy and a way of life.      

Major Highlights of Mahindra Kabira Festival 

The Festival honours the teachings and the life of Kabir Das in a melodious affair. The last 3 versions of the festival saw musicians paying tribute to this legendary mystic poet through their surs and philosophers decoding his verses and quotes to understand him to the core. Singers from several gharanas, and genres like Sufi, Ghazal, Thumri, along with instrument players grace the event by their presence and performance.

The festival is not just the melting pot of melodious voices, but it’s also an opportunity to explore the rich culture of Varanasi. The ghats of Ganga and the local food of Varanasi make the event a grand affair that is hard to forget! Mahindra Kabira festival is celebrated in the memory of Sant Kabir, the mystic poet of the 15th century. His teachings about love, devotion, and peace are remembered through this festival. Every year during November, Varanasi experiences a soulful 2-day event along the ghats. If you are confused about how to reach this festival then follow the routes mentioned below. You can pick and choose any one of them according to your convenience. From Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Hyderabad, you need to cover a distance of 863km, 1,824km, 675 km, and 1,233 km respectively to reach Varanasi.

By Air. The nearest airport to Varanasi is the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport. The airport is located at a distance of 18.9 km from the main city. You can take flight from some of the major cities to reach Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport. Prices may vary according to the distance.

  • Kolkata:  you can board planes from Dumdum airport. Flights like Vistara and SpiceJet operate on this route. It takes 1 hr 45 minutes to reach. Price - 2,800 INR per person.
  • Bangalore: Board a flight from Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. It takes around 4 hrs 20 mins to reach. Price - 3072 INR per person approximately.
  • DelhiBoard planes from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. Go. It takes 1 hrs 10 mins to reach Varanasi. Vistara, SpiceJet operates on this route. Price- 3000 INR per person approximately.

By Road. Varanasi is connected to cities like Lucknow, Ranchi, Patna, Gorakhpur, and Allahabad. Highways like NH-28 and NH-2 connects Varanasi from Lucknow. It takes around 7 hours to reach Varanasi. You can also avail of the services of air-conditioned private and luxury buses from Lucknow. These buses are all maintained by the State. The roads of the highways are well maintained, which ensures a smooth travelling experience. The ticket price of these buses is also quite affordable.

By Train. The two primary railway station is Kashi and Railway junction of Varanasi. You can book your tickets to any of these stations. The major cities of India are connected by an efficient network of railroads to Varanasi. Major trains like Garibrath are available from Delhi. Several modes of transport like rickshaws and autos are available outside the two railway stations big Varanasi. The railway station is also at a close distance from the major area of Benaras.
