History Of Lothal

Boasting of rich and vibrant history, Lothan has been one of the most progressive and thriving cities in the world. It was discovered in 1955 by the excavation of land after the partition of India and Pakistan when Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro became part of Pakistan.

Believed to be a business hub, Lothal was connected with ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. The beads made here and the prospering pottery industry of Lothal were popular all over the world. The highlight of Lothal was the exceptionally well-planned drainage system. 

Major Attractions Of Lothal

1. Excavation Site

This site in Lothal will take you 4,500 years back and you can see the remains of the thriving city which it was once. The ruins of Lothal have historical significance and offer a great lesson in History. 

2. Well

Considered to be 4,500 years old, the well is quite a sight to see. 6.7 meters tall and 2.4 meters wide, the well is a steep whole used to collect fresh water. It was built using radical bricks and consists of a well-connected underground drainage system.  

3. Dockyard

Specifically designed so that it could withstand the excess water flow, the dockyard in Lothal was built using fine burnt bricks. The splendid architecture of the dockyard and the tunnel opens up in the river to avoid water clogging. The water locking device is extraordinary and it was so grand that it could easily accommodate 90 huge ships at a time. 

4. Citadel

The chief of the city used to live at Citadel which is also known as Acropolis. The houses at the citadel were carefully built on a 3-meter high platform and were provided with all the facilities like an underground den, a private well, and paved paths.

5. Warehouse

One of the most important structures in Lothal is the warehouse. It was used to store a huge amount of objects and hence they were constructed perfectly. It was constructed near the citadel so that the chief could supervise the construction work. The warehouse was constructed by using mud bricks on a 3.5 meters high podium.

The nearest airbase from Lothal is in Ahmedabad which is 78 kilometers away from the destination. You can either hire a taxi or travel via local buses that are easily available from Ahmedabad. 

By Rail

The nearest railhead to reach Lothal is in Bhurkhi which is well-connected with other cities in Gujarat and is only 8 kilometers away from the destination. To cover the remaining distance, local buses and cabs are available just outside the Bhurkhi railway station. 

By Road

Lothal is well-connected with cities like Ahmedabad and Mumbai that are 78 kilometers and 521 kilometers away from the ancient city respectively. One can reach by their own car or by renting a taxi.
