History of Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar carries an enriching history of various dynasties. On this soil, many kings, from King Singhan to the kings and rajas of Brahmin dynasty, have walked and ruled with grace.

By the 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj had conquered this region and had built the much famous Pratapgarh Fort on this land. 

However, with the onset of the 19th century, Mahabaleshwar saw many British lords as well as officials who brought strawberry plants from Australia and planted them in the regions of Panchgani as well as Mahabaleshwar.

It was named after Arthur Malet who lost his wife and also a month old daughter in a catastrophic accident that happened in the Savitri River.

4. Venna Lake. Surrounded by lush hills and trees on all sides, this shimmering lake is dotted with colourful boats. By Air. The nearest airport is the Pune Airport (PNQ). This airport has good connectivity with other Indian cities and has international flight connectivity. This airport is a civil enclave and is managed by the Airport Authority of India. Once you deboard at the airport, you will need to cover the remaining distance by some means of public transportation. 

By Train. The Pune railway station would be your best option to reach Mahabaleshwar. However, the nearest train station is Wathar situated close to 60 km but in terms of connectivity, Pune is much better and well-routed. Once you deboard at the train station, you can consider travelling further by some means of public transportation.  

By Road. You can also consider travelling to Mahabaleshwar by well-maintained road networks. There are regular buses and taxis available from nearby cities and states. You can also consider travelling in your personal vehicle if residing in nearby regions.
