History of Dharmapuri

Historically, Dharmapuri is believed to have been controlled by the Pallava dynasty in the 8th century. Then by the 9th century, Rashtrakutas took over the reins of kingship from Pallavas which were further passed on to the Cholas by 11th century as they defeated Pallavas.

In the 18th century, Dharmapuri had become a part of the Mysore Kingdom and went by the name of Baramahal. After the third Anglo-Mysore War, the then king Tipu Sultan had to agree to share his territories with the Britishers that also included Dharmapuri.
