1. Last Friday, thieves broke into England’s West Sussex’s Arundel Castle and stole artifacts worth $1.4 million. An "irreplaceable" gold rosary set was also stolen in the robbery. It was the set that the Queen of Scots, Mary, took with her when she was beheaded for treason in 1587. The castle used to be home to the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for more than 850 years.
2. Trekkers can now go on a hike to the Appalachian Trail as it makes a comeback. All the hikers were asked to postpone their trials last year in March, because of the COVID outbreak by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC). The ATC is aiming to bring back the long-distance trekkers since people are now getting vaccinated. The second reason for this decision is that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found out that outdoor activities are significantly less risky for spreading the virus.
3. To promote the vaccination drive, United Airlines have just announced to give away a year’s worth of free flight to vaccinated tourists. Under the Your Shot to Fly campaign, United Airlines is offering a year-long pass to one lucky person who is completely vaccinated.
The CEO of United Airlines, Scott Kirby said, "We're proud to do our part to incentivize people to get their shot. We're excited to give people one more reason to get vaccinated so they can reunite with friends and family or take that long-awaited vacation which could be just one shot away."
4. The government of Maharashtra is planning to get 14 of its forts tagged for World Heritage Site status. All these 14 forts belong to the great Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s era, built in the Maratha Military style architecture.
After getting approval by the Ministry of Culture, and after a few important locations being nominated by the Archaeological Survey of India, a list of 14 forts has been forwarded to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation or UNESCO that could get World Heritage Status.
5. Established way back in 1888, the Musee Carnavalet has now been reopened after remaining closed for five years. The museum was closed for a makeover worth 55 million euros. In order to reopen for international travelers, the French government has decided to reopen the museum on May 29. Popular for holding exhibits related to the history of this grand city, the museum is housed in two old buildings. This iconic museum in Paris offers a great amalgamation of curiosities and artifacts, all related to the awe-inspiring history of the city.
