Himachal Pradesh, also known as the land of magical vistas, is a place where a great number of tourist events and fairs are held. And one such event is the Spring Festival. As the name of this festival suggests, it is majorly celebrated to welcome the spring season at Kullu valley. This event holds a kind of glory that hasn’t been lost over time. 

On the occasion of the Spring Festival, a lot of cultural programs are organized inclusive of classical music songs and dances. Now, what’s really interesting is that it is also quite good from a business point of view. This is mainly because the people belonging to Lahaul begin to return to their native place around this time of the year and this fair essentially provides them with an opportunity to buy agricultural tools and other useful items for their household and journey itself.

History of Spring Festival

The festival was started years ago by the king of Himachal Pradesh. Since then it is celebrated towards the end of the month of April every year in Kullu. This time is also considered as the onset of spring in Himachal Pradesh. Spring Festival also goes by the name, Basantotsav or Pipal Jatra.

Major Attractions of Spring Festival

1. Artist Show. The Spring festival is also known for its cultural performances. A number of artists from the entire country come to Kullu to be a part of the festivities. The Kala Kendra in the amphitheatre is commonplace for the artists to showcase their performance.

2. Eating Fest. This is also the time during which eating fests are organized. Loads of Himachal Pradesh’s special delicacies are dished out for the visitors. Moreover, people also indulge in shopping and photography during the Spring festival.

3. Tourist Culmination. Spring festival is also the time when the state receives tons of tourists from all over the globe. With an international presence in the scenario, this festival becomes even more enticing to the domestic population.

How to Reach

Kullu is a beautiful district in the state of Himachal Pradesh and is very attractive to tourists as well. It is famous for its beautiful hills covered with deodar and pine forests. Kullu is located at a distance of 501, 2,681, 1,906, 2,036 km from Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata respectively. Here are three major transport modes via which you can reach the Spring festival venue.

By Air. The nearest airport that is also well-connected to the major cities in the country is Kullu Manali Airport in Bhuntar, Kullu. After deboarding, you can take public transport to travel in and around the area. The airport is under the Airport Authority of India (AAI). It is equipped with all modern facilities, such as an automated firefighting system, toilets for the specially-abled, advance PA systems, fire detection, modern ticketing counters, etc.

  2. Mumbai - Board Air India, Go Air, Spicejet from Mumbai Airport. The airfares start from Rs.12,000

  4. Madurai - Board Spicejet, Air India, IndiGo from Madurai airport. The airfares start from Rs.12,000

By Train. The nearest railway station to Kullu is Jogindernagar. However, its connectivity to major cities is not strong. The next closest railway station which is well-connected to far cities is in Chandigarh. It has good overall connectivity when it comes to travelling from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Pune, and Mumbai. After deboarding the train, you would need to take a cab or some other means of transportation to further reach your destination.

  2. Mumbai - Board Paschim Express from Bandra Terminus and deboard at the Chandigarh Junction

By Road. Himachal Pradesh has good overall connectivity via well-maintained road networks. Here is how you can reach the Spring festival via the following ways. 

  1. Manali - 40 km via NH3 
  2. Chandigarh - 250 km via NH154
  3. Shimla - 209 km via NH3, NH154 and NH205
  4. Hamirpur - 151 km via NH3
  5. Amritsar - 204 km via Grand Trunk Rd and NH3
