According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, performed intense penance to obtain the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva granted him the linga but warned that it should never be placed on the ground.
To prevent Ravana from taking the Atma Linga to Lanka, the gods devised a plan. Lord Ganesha, in the guise of a young Brahmin boy, tricked Ravana into placing the linga on the ground at Gokarna. Parts of the linga scattered during the incident, and one of those fragments is believed to have fallen in Murudeshwara. This divine fragment led to the establishment of the Murudeshwara Temple, turning the town into a sacred pilgrimage center.
