The last Mughal-built gardens out of the eleven gardens, the construction of Mehtab Bagh was done by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. For this, he had identified a site from the floodplains of Yamuna as the perfect place to build a garden.

Thus, Mehtab Bagh was constructed with white plaster walkways, airy pavilions, fountains, and fruit trees. This garden was designed as an important part of the Taj Mahal. However, later on in history, the garden was ruined due to the floods and by the 1990’s it had depleted into a ruckus of wild vegetation.
