Kavaratti besides being a beautiful island of white sand beaches is also the capital of Union Territory Lakshadweep. The island is known to be one of the most developed islands of the Lakshadweep Archipelago. Another interesting fact about the island is that it is home to as many as 52 mosques that are spread in its roughly 5 square kilometers of area. Every year tourists from mainland India and abroad visit the island for its exotic views and calm ambiance.  

History of Kavaratti Island 

Not much has been documented about the history of the island. Locals claim that the island served as a breakpoint for voyagers to relax in the journey to India and surrounding countries. Besides that, the mosques that are located here are claimed to be built in the 17th century by the invaders who resided on the island for some time.    

After India’s independence, Kavaratti developed as a popular tourist destination for beach lovers and water sport enthusiasts. The lagoon along the shore of the Kavaratti also lends a great space for water activities like snorkeling, swimming and exploring coral reefs. 

Apart from all the fun activities, Kavaratti island also serves as a significant navy base for the Indian Navy. Recently, the island also got selected among the 100 cities that will be developed under Prime Minister’s Smart Cities Mission.

Major Attractions of Kavaratti Island 

Ujra Mosque 

This 17th century built mosque is believed to be constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim. The place is visited by local people for prayers. The grave of Mohammad Kasim is within the mosque.   

Water Sports

Kavaratti Island is popular among tourists for myriad water adventure sports. Tourists can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, glass-bottomed boat rides, surfing and more at the island. 

Kavaratti Marine Aquarium 

The aquarium is the most visited destination on the island. It has coral reefs and fish specimens along with many species of fishes in the display. One can enhance one’s knowledge about the underwater world by visiting this intriguing place. 

Events and Festivals of Kavaratti Island

Food of Kavaratti Island 

Being a coastal settlement the local food of the islands of Lakshadweep is majorly influenced by seafood and coconut. Coconut milk and coconut oil are commonly used in the local cuisines. Some popular dishes that one must try if in Kavaratti are: Tuna, Chicken, Sweet Potato, Maasu Podichath, octopus fry, and Mus Kavaab.  

Best Time to Visit Kavaratti Island 

Months between August and March are great to visit the island. Being surrounded by the sea the weather remains moderate throughout the year but the summer season can ruin the fun with its hot and humid weather conditions.  

How to Reach 

Kavaratti island is located in Lakshadweep Archipelago and is surrounded by Arabian sea from all sides hence one can only reach the island by two means either by water or by air.  

By Water.  Tourists can reach Kavaratti island by several passenger ships that run between Cochin and Lakshadweep. MV Minicoy, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi, MV Arabia Sea, MV Kavaratti, and MV Tippu Sultan. The trip usually takes 15 to 20 hours to reach the Lakshadweep.  

By Air. Agatti airport on Agatti island is the nearest to reach the Kavaratti island. Majorly, connecting and direct flights from Cochin airport arrive in Agatti. From there one can take the helicopter service or boat service to reach Kavaratti island.
