The Rumi Darwaza is a historical heritage situated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It was built in the era of Nawab Asaf-Ud-daula in 17th century. The amalgamation of Mughal and Awadhi architecture gives it a beautiful structure that is praiseworthy. Not only locals but also international people love to visit the place to admire the historical heritage. 

This massive gate is situated between Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara. This place is generally very much busy all day, and during weekends most of the tourists visit. The streets are redeveloped as it was earlier constructed of hard brick roadways.


Why You Should Visit Rumi Darwaza

The Rumi Darwaza, which stands sixty feet tall, was modelled (1784) after the Sublime Porte (Bab-iHümayun) in Istanbul. It is adjacent to the Asafi Imambara in Lucknow and has become a logo for the city of Lucknow. It used to mark the entrance to Old Lucknow City, but as the City of Nawabs grew and expanded, it was later used as an entrance to a palace which was later demolished by the British insurgents. Overall, there is a great deal of history associated with this place which you shouldn’t miss.

Jetavana. This is the place where Gautama Buddha spent 20 years of his life. Here, he was preaching to his disciples. A tranquil place to spend some quality time!

Hazratganj. You can visit the place for many British portraits and model of residency. A great place to explore the British Era.

Constantia House. The historical premise that is visually appealing with fine architecture will give a major reason to analyze the British Era.

Architecture. Rumi Darwaza is adorned with wonderfully carved flowers and designs. The uppermost part of the structure is topped with a chhatri (umbrella) which can be reached through a staircase. It is interesting to know that at one point in time, there was a lantern at the top of the structure. In addition, the exquisitely carved flower buds situated on the sides of the arch release little jets of water.

How to Reach Rumi Darwaza?

By Road. Rumi Darwaza is well connected through roads. One can take a local taxi, bus or auto-rickshaw to reach there. The nearest bus stand is Lal Pul Bus stand towards Rumi Darwaza.

By Rail. Lucknow city railway station is the nearest railway station to Rumi Darwaza. After deboarding, the train one has to cover another 1km to reach this historic site.

By Air. Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport is the nearest airport to Rumi Darwaza. From the airport, you have to travel another 8km to reach Rumi Darwaza.
