Being one of the most popular travel destinations, Mussoorie has carved a place for itself in the list of best travel getaways in India. 

The backdrop of Shivalik Hills fills Mussoorie with raw life and its spectacular musings. And hey, did you know that Mussoorie is also known as the Queen of Hills?

This might be so because it is located at an altitude of about 7,000 feet. Pretty high, no?

Mussoorie experiences pleasant climatic conditions throughout the year, thus, you can travel here at any point of time in the year. However, if you cannot stand the chilly winds of the winter season, then, you can plan your trip here during the summer months as well.

History of Mussoorie

By 1803, the Gorkha tribe under the leadership of Umer Singh Thapa, conquered the Garhwal as well Dehra regions, soon after which, Mussoorie was established. Then on November 1, 1814, another war broke out in which the Britishers came out as winners. 

As a result of this war, by 1815, the Gorkhas were completely excavated from the region. Then, in 1825, Mussoorie was established with a new identity of chilled out travel getaway. This was done by a British official - Captain Young. 

In 1901, Mussoorie had become a popular place due to which its population touched about 6,461 and in the same year, in the summer season, it grew to about 15,000 inhabitants. It was also the same five year period between 1900-1905 when railways were introduced in the region. Due to this, the travel distance to Mussoorie that was 93 km (by road) was shortened to about 34 km.

Major Attractions in and Around Mussoorie

1. Lal Tibba. It is located on the top of Depot Hill in Landour which is about 6 kilometres from Mussoorie. The name of Lal Tibba literally means the red hill. Due to its natural beauty, it comes across as an incredible tourist attraction to visit in Mussoorie.

2. Lake Mist. Now, this is counted amongst the most charming destinations in Mussoorie. The lush greenery with which this lake has been wrapped and the turquoise hue of the crystal clear water of this lake makes you end up staying for a longer duration. 

3. Kempty Falls. These falls are located between the Dehradun-Mussoorie roads and come across as a wonderful travel getaway to explore in Mussoorie. For those who want to have real fun are strongly advised to not miss out on it.

4. Gun Hill. It is the second-highest peak of Mussoorie and is famous due to its natural beauty. From here, you can experience some of the most adorable views of nature’s panoramic vistas. The view of the highest Himalayan peaks will simply take your breath away.

How to Reach Mussoorie

Mussoorie is an exquisite travel getaway and its natural beauty won’t disappoint you at all. It is located at an approximate distance of about 289, 1,686, 1,753, 2,405 km from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru respectively. Check the details below on how to reach Mussoorie by the following means of public transportation. 

By Air. The nearest airport from Mussoorie is the Jolly Grant Airport (DED) aka Dehradun Airport situated about 60 km away. It was in 2008, that the airport began its commercial operations and since then many measures have been taken to enhance the overall flight connectivity to Dehradun.  

If you are planning on flying here, then it is advised to take connecting flights from Delhi and Chandigarh. And from the airport, take some means of public transport to reach Mussoorie.

By Train. Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) is the nearest railhead from Mussoorie and is situated at a distance of about 30-35 km. It was established in 1899 by the Britishers and if you want to reach here then you can consider boarding some of the trains namely - Dehradun Jan Shatabdi Express, Dehradun Express, Allahabad Link Express, Dehradun Shatabdi Express, Kathgodam Express, Nanda Devi Express and Kochuveli Dehradun Superfast Express. 

From the station, you can easily book a taxi or some other means of public transportation. 

By Road. Mussoorie can also be travelled by a well-maintained network of roadways. If you are an inhabitant of the nearby regions, then you can easily consider booking taxis or board interstate/private buses. Otherwise, taking your own vehicle is another convenient option that remains.
