History of Bageshwar

Historically, Bageshwar was referred to as Danpur, and was ruled by the Katyuri dynasty back in the day i.e. in the 7th century.

However, after the complete disintegration of this kingdom in the 13th century, the geographical stretch of Bageshwar came under the rule of Baijnath Katyurs who were known to be the direct descendants of Katyuri kings.

By 1791, the seat of Kumaon which is Almora was invaded by the Gorkha army of Nepal. It is said that after coming victorious, the Gorkhas ruled this region for a period of about 24 years and then were only defeated by the East India Company in a battle that took place in 1814 - they were forced to cede Kumaon to the Britishers as per the treaty of Sugauli which happened in 1816.

After its annexation, Bageshwar became a part of the Danpur Pargana which lies in the Almora district.

By 1974, Bageshwar was made a separate tehsil and by 1976, it was declared a pargana (a group of villages).
