Barura Sharif Fair is held every year in the memory of a Sufi Saint named Data Amir Ali Shah. He was known for his vast humanitarian work and a deep love for humanity. He also had a great influence on people, whether they were Hindu or Muslims.

The Barura Sharif Fair is held to honour the saint and remember his legacy. His shrine is located at Barura Sharif which is just 12 km from Pratappur at the banks of river Sat Bahini, Jharkhand.

Data Amir Ali Shah was famous for his simplicity, purity, love, and most importantly, a profound regard for all individuals irrespective of their religion, caste or creed.

Barura Sharif, in itself, is a shrine constructed in his memory. The fair is held here and many rituals are performed. People come from faraway places to pay homage to the revered saint. This fair is held in Chatra for 10 days, during the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar.

History of Barura Sharif

The history of Jharkhand tells us that the Sufi saint came in the state sometime in the 18th century. He quickly became highly revered and was known for his purity as well as miracles.

Even today, people who feel a paranormal presence in their lives, come here to seek blessings and resolve their problems. In the past, people from far away places, of all religions, used to visit him to have his divine hand over their heads.

The shrine was constructed back then, with the intent of making the saint immortal in this world. The fair is held every year to cherish how great of a human being he was. 

Major Attractions of Barura Sharif 2020

1. Beautiful Shrine. The shrine of Barura Sharif is at a height of 10 feet from the river and thus people have to cross the stream to get to the shrine. The shrine in itself is a sight to behold and gives the visitors instantaneous and inexplicable peace and serenity. 

2. Grand Fair. The annual fair celebrated at the location is grand in celebration. The whole affair is incredibly ceremonious and is still conducted with much gaiety and light-heartedness. People from all around the country come to seek blessings from the saint irrespective of their religion or culture. 

3. 10-Day Fair. The Barura Sharif Fair is conducted for ten consecutive days. During these ten days, people visit his Mazaar and pay respect to the Sufi saint. While the religious aspect stays strong, the fun factor is also not ignored. People enjoy a lot of activities during the fair – from delicious food to fun games, there is a lot for one and all to enjoy. The festival ends with Fatiha Khwani, the holy recital of the Quran.

The festival is celebrated in Chatra, which is situated in the state of Jharkhand. The place is not yet connected by air or rail but Gaya, Bihar is the nearest airport or railway station to the district.
