Located in the Pulwama district in India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, Pulwama city is located at a distance of 25 km from Srinagar. An interesting fact about this place is that it is also known as the ‘Anand of Kashmir’ and ‘Dudha Kul of Kashmir’ for high milk production in this area. Fundamentally an agricultural economy, the place is now developing as a tourist spot as a lot of tourists from across the country arrive here to witness its beauty and indulge in adventure sports such as mountaineering and trekking. All this boosts the tourist economy and offers a good monetary share in the state's revenue model.    

History of Pulwama 

Pulwama district was formed in the year 1979 in order to promote better administration and law order and other facilities. Pulwama was known as Panwangam before it was named Pulwama in 1979. Kashmir sultanate ruled the entire region before Mughals invaded and captured the region in the 16th century. Pulwama has 4 major villages: Dalipora, Malikpora, Dangarpora, and Chattapora. These 4 villages were combined and the name Pulwama was coined which means ‘knitting together’. 

Today Pulwama district comprises more than 300 villages that come under the following 5 tehsils: Tral, Pulwama,  Awantipora, Pampore, and Shopian. Pulwama primarily has an agricultural economy that is known for the production of rice, saffron, and milk. Pulwama is known among tourists for its numerous spring streams, waterfalls, green meadows, and rich biodiversity. Apart from natural beauty, Pulwama is also home to various historical monuments some most popular among them are Payer temple, Avantishwar temple, and Khankha Tral.

Aharbal Falls

There is no doubt in the fact that Aharbal Falls is one of the most interesting places to experience in Pulwama. Being a tributary of the Jhelum river this place is out and out amazing to experience in all its immensity. The scenic and natural beauty this place attracts a great number of tourists and travelers from around the world.  

Shikargah

Located at an approximate distance of 3 kilometers, the Shikargah is quite an enchanting place to visit especially with your family. This place is surrounded by lush green forests which makes it one of the most awesome tourist attractions to explore. Locals claim that the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh used to arrive here to witness wild animals.

Payer Temple

The Payer Temple is also located at a distance of around 3 km from Pulwama. If the legend is to be believed then this temple dates back to the 10th century. The most fascinating thing about the temple is that it is a monolith structure.

Visit Avantishwar Temple

Located in the Jawbrari village this temple dates back to the 9th century AD. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu this place has an amazing spiritual aura owing to which it attracts a great number of devotees. 

Tarsar and Marsar Lake

The Tarsar and Marsar trek which is in Kashmir is quite different in trekking as compared to anywhere else in the country. However, you would get to explore some of the most amazing alpine lakes while on this trek. 

Events and festivals in & around Pulwama

Hemis Festival

The Hemis Gompa is one of the largest as well as the richest monasteries in Kashmir. This day has been declared as the state holiday and is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm among the local people. During this festival, all the festivities take place within a large courtyard. 

Baisakhi

The festival of Baisakhi is celebrated with great zeal throughout the country on the 13th of April. This is the date which is the onset of harvesting season in India. And this festival sees celebrations at a humongous level even in Pulwama. 

Shikara Festival

This festival is celebrated once every year. The very purpose of this festival is to promote tourism. And along with this, there are other cultural programs that are organized to give the tourists a sneak peek into the culture of Kashmir.

Food of Pulwama 

Pulwama is not just home to beautiful locations and adventure sports, the place has a unique flavor that is very evident in its local dishes. Tourists must try ‘Wazwan’ a community lunch at local weddings, and dishes like Tujji (mutton),  Qabargaah (lamb), Modur Pulaao (dessert) and Muj Gaad (fish). 

Best time to visit Pulwama

Months between April to October are the best time to visit Pulwama. During this time the overall temperature is quite good for sightseeing and exploring the place to the fullest. Winters can be too chilly and at times the rail route, highways and flights get affected by extreme and unfavorable weather and snowfall in winters, hence a trip in the summertime is great. 

How to reach Pulwama? 

By Air. If you are planning to visit Pulwama via air then you should get a flight till Srinagar airport. And from there you can get a cab or a bus to reach Pulwama that is nearly 30km away. Srinagar airport receives direct and connecting flights from across the country hence booking flights will not be a problem.  

By Road. Pulwama is quite well connected via road. So, if you are planning to visit Pulwama by road then it would be a convenient experience for you as you may even take your personal car.bike or may reserve a seat in an inter-state/intra-state tourist bus to reach Pulwama. In either case, you have to cover nearly 790, 2,100, 2,200, and 3,000km from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru respectively.  

By Train. There are no regular trains to Pulwama. However, to reach via train you would need to go to Srinagar railway station and from there you can get a cab or a tourist bus to reach the desired location in Pulwama. The Srinagar train station is well connected to different metro cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Lucknow.
