Hemis, locally called as “Hamis” is a village which is situated in the Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir. This place is quite well known for its scenic beauty and lush greenery.  it is also well known for the Hemis monastery which was established during 1672 AD by King Senge Nampar Gyalwa. And it is in this place that you will be finding the home to the endangered species of the snow leopard. 

History Of Hemis

Hemis name of the village is after its famous ancient Hemis Monastery. Th3e monaster belongs to Drukpa Patron which is said to be established in the 11th century. Somehow, monastery faced the severe decay for several years, again, it the revival of the monastery took place during  the 17th century with the effort of King Sengge Namgyal.

Places to visit in Hemis

Hemis High Altitude Wildlife Sanctuary. This wildlife sanctuary is located at a height of 3,300m to 6,000m above the sea level. What is interesting about this sanctuary is the fact that it is known to be one of the highest sanctuaries from sea-level all across the world. And if you are lucky then here you will also get to find the rare snow leopards.

Hemis Monastery. The Hemis Monastery is considered as one of the wealthiest Tibetan monasteries. The Hemis Monastery is located at a distance of 45 km from Leh in Hemis, Ladakh. This monastery belongs to the Drupka family. Situated in the foothills of the Indus this place was re-established by the Sengge Namgyal. 

Stakna Gompa. It is after following a  small shaky bridge which is located over the Indus that one leads to Stakna Gompa which is situated on the banks of the river and looks out onto perhaps some of the most panoramic and beautiful views of Hemis.

shopping in Hemis. While visiting Hemis Gompa, you should definitely explore the markets of Hemis. Right from beautiful paintings to wooden dragon statues to postcards, there are several gift items one can but.

Visit Shang Gompa. It is  situated in the middle of the snow-peaked mountains along with the wrinkled terrains of the Leh and Ladakh the Shang Gompa symbolizes peace, composure and tranquillity. The chanting of the monks is more or less a hypnotizing of an experience.

Galdan Namchot. This festival is celebrated in Tibet, Mongolia. The main purpose of this festival is to commemorate the birth, death along with the Buddhahood of Je Tsongkhapa. Losar Celebrations. On this day, the enthronement of the King is celebrated. The celebrations of this festival go on for three days. Best time to visit Hemis

During winters Hemis turns into spell-bounding and beautiful scenery, you will love to experience it between October and November. Also,  if you want to get away from the taccy summers of plains, visiting during March to June will be perfect.

How to reach Hemis? 

By Air. The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport . It is a well-organized airport which is connected to major cities of India. Once you reach the airport, you can easily take bus, auto or taxi towards the Hemis.

 By Train. Nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi Railway Station and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station which are 786 and 70.6 kilometres away from Hemis respectively. Both stations are  well-connected to major cities of India such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.Popular Himsagar Express used to originates from Jammu Tawi Railway station but now it departs from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station towards Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.

By Road. Road connectivity of Hemis is well-structured  to roam nearby regions of Leh. There are two popular routes such as Srinagar via Kargil at Srinagar-Leh Highway and from Manali via Sarchu and Dharchu at Manali-Leh Highway. Both routes are opened between June-October. There are regular bus services from Leh, Srinagar and Jammu. This makes the whole journey via road quite convenient  and journey can surely be a memorable for you.
