History of Jamshedpur

The Jamshetji Tata from Tata Industry has a big role in the formation of Jamshedpur. Around the beginning of the 20th century, Jamshetji Tata met steel makers in Pittsburgh in California to get advanced technology for the steel plant. It is also said that the Jamshetji Tata got the inspiration of steel plantation while he was listening to the lectures of Thomas Carlyle. Then, Jamsetji Tata asked geologist Charles Page Perin to find an ideal place in India for steel plantation. The place should be rich in coal, iron, water and limestone. With the continuation of the project, Maharaja of Mayurbhanj appointed a geologist named Pramatha Nath Bose for the same. This was the time when P.N. Bose was working on the lands of Sakchi. On the request of Maharaja, he surveyed Gorumahisani hills of Babonghati region in Mayurbhanj wherein he found Hematite stone which came under Sakchi. Then, the Bose had insisted the Jamshetji Tata choose Sankchi for his steel plantation.

The visionary Jamshetji Tata not only founded his steel plantation in the Sakchi village of the Jamshedpur but also got the blueprint to develop a city which is now known as Jamshedpur. It is his vision to form a proper city instead of just occupying some places for workers. With his continuous effort, the place has emerged as a well-developed city which had proper roads, Public leisure parks, temples, Mosques, Churches and many more. It is the only city in India which does not come under the municipality administration. It still runs under the administration of Tatas.
