History of Dandeli

Dandeli has some really fascinating historical background attached to it. It is believed that once upon a time there was a servant of the Mirashi family named Dandelappa who had fallen in love with the lady of the same family. It is said that she too had fallen in love with him and even proposed him marriage out of love. But as he was a loyal servant to the family, he had respectfully declined her proposal. 

She couldn’t handle this rejection and went wild with rage and in a fit of her unchecked emotions lied to her brothers that how Dandelappa had misbehaved with her. Consequently, the brothers in their anger killed Dandelappa cutting him in two pieces. It is said that both his head and body had landed in two different geographical parts where now two temples exist. And it was after him that this town came to be known as Dandeli.

Falling on the full moon night, in the month of January; it is believed that on this day the Goddess Parvati gave a spear to Lord Murugan for the purpose of killing Soorapadman the evil demon. Winter season is the best time to visit Dandeli. Yes, the months from October to February are particularly the best months to travel to this interesting place and spend some quality time with your loved ones.

How to reach Dandeli

By Air. Dandeli doesn’t have its own airport. So, instead of Dandeli, one can get a flight to Hubli Airport. From here, the Dandeli is located at a distance of around 56 km so you would need to cover this distance via some sort of transportation like a cab or an auto-rickshaw. Hubli airport has very good flight connectivity with other cities such as Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, etc. 

By Road. Dandeli is quite well connected with all the major cities by road. So, if you are planning a trip getaway to visiting Dandeli then there are regular buses which you can take for the purpose of travelling to Dandeli. You can also take your own vehicle for travelling to Dandeli. 

By Train. There are no regular trains to this place. The nearest station is Alnavar Junction from where Dandeli is around 23 km away. If you travel via train then after deboarding you will need to take a cab or some other means of transportation.
