Kangra is a city in the state of Himachal Pradesh along with municipal council in the Kangra district. The city of Kangra was earlier known as Nagarkot and was found by the Katoch Kshatriya Rajputs of Chandervanshi Lineage who held Kangra and had forts and lavish temples under them. Kangra was known for its unique practices and methods of plastic operations which were quite famous in the north side. These methods were quite accessible and reliable for the North Indians. There is this temple of Devi Vajreshwari in Kangra town which is known to be one of the oldest and wealthiest temples in North India. It got destroyed with the fort in the year 1905 by an earthquake which also took several lives. Kangra Fort in the town is one of the most popular destinations in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is also quite old in the history of the state and thus people from all around the country visit to see it and experience the beauty of Kangra. The town is also home to the Masrur Rock-cut temples built by Pandavas. It is quite easy to reach the city as the nearest airport is Kangra Airport which is 10 km from the city and is also served by a railway line which runs from Pathankot 94 km from there.

Makar Sankranti

The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated all over India. According to the legend behind this festival, it is said that Mata Barjeshwari got herself hurt while fighting with the great demon Mahishashura and then to cure herself she took some ghee and applied it on the wound which got healed quickly. During this festival, there is a grand fair which is particularly celebrated at the Brajeshwari temple for a period of seven days. There are bhajans, prasadam and so much more.  

Chait

This festival is celebrated with great zeal among the local people and is specifically celebrated in the month of Chet. The main motive of this festival is to push away all the negative energies and drive in prosperity and happiness.

Haryali

This festival is held on a yearly basis on the 16th of July. What is something to know about this festival is the fact that it is particularly dedicated to the rain god. Around 10 days before this festival, people mix sic to seven kinds of seeds and sow them in a basket which is filled with soil. And on the day the idols of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati are married. That is so because it is believed that their union is the harbinger of fertility.

How to reach Kangra?

By Air - The nearest airport is the Gaggal airport and is situated at a distance of around 11 km from the Kangra town. From there, you can easily get a taxi or any other means of public transportation.

By Road -  The overall connectivity via road to Kangra is quite good. So, if you are planning to visit this place by road then you won’t be facing any issue and would be a seamless experience for you.

By Train - It needs to be observed that Kangra does have a railway station but it is a toy train station and thus it is not connected with the other cities of the country.
