History of Visakhapatnam

The history of Visakhapatnam dates back to the 6th century BCE and finds it first mentions somewhere around 4th century BCE in the Sanskrit writings of Panini and Katyayana.

Historically, it was ruled by the Vengi Kingdom and the Pallava dynasty as well as the Eastern Ganga dynasties dating back to the medieval times. The archaeological records of this place suggest that the present city of Visakhapatnam was built somewhere around the timeline of the 11th and 12th centuries. Back then, the rule of this Kingdom fluctuated between Chola and Gajapati Kingdoms. And somewhere in the 16th century, it was conquered by the Mughals as well. Seeing so many rulers and kingdoms come by, Visakhapatnam has truly seen a lot. 

Eventually, the European powers came into being setting up the trading interests in the city of Visakhapatnam and then by 18th century this city was under the French rule. However, the Britishers were able to capture this place after the battle of Vizagapatnam and then it remained under the colonial rule till India’s independence.

Borra Caves - These Borra caves are also known as Borra Gohalu. These are located on the east coast of India in the Ananthagiri hills of the Araku valley. They are also known as one of the biggest caves in India situated at an elevation of 705 m. These caves are basically Karstic and limestone structures going to a depth of 80 m and are also the deepest caves of India. These caves were discovered in the year of 1807 by a geologist named William King George of the Geological Survey of India.

Events and festivals in & around Visakhapatnam 

Chandnotsavam - Chandana Yatra, this festival is one of the famous festivals of the Visakhapatnam. On this day, literally thousands of devotees visit the Lakshmi Narsimha Swamy temple to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the divine. The surroundings of the temple are decorated in the most befitted manner to mark the occasion of this festival.  

Navy Day - This event is celebrated on 4th December for the purpose of celebrating the achievements of the Naval force of the country. And for the very purpose of celebrating this occasion, the western naval command of the Indian army bring their ships along with the sailors. The activities for this occasion are planned by the Eastern Naval Command. And the cherry on the cake of this whole event is the aircraft flying scene. When various aircrafts tear through the sky, every Indian heart swells with pride. 

Best time to visit Visakhapatnam

The best time to visit Visakhapatnam is from the months of October to March. The temperature during this time stays very moderate and offers a very pleasant climate for sightseeing activities.

How to reach Visakhapatnam? 

By Air - The city of Visakhapatnam is quite well connected by other prominent cities such as Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore etc. The Visakhapatnam airport is situated at a distance of 8km from the city linking various other airports from other cities. Once you get off, there are many cab services and bus services available outside the airport which you can use to travel to your destination. 

By Road - The connectivity via road routes is also quite good. If you are planning a road trip then it is a great opportunity to explore the terrain of this place. Visakhapatnam is quite well-connected with other cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune etc. You will have to take either NH44, NH65, NH16 to make your travel plans. 

By Train - The nearest railways stations from Visakhapatnam are Simhachalam and Visakhapatnam railway junction. From there, you can get trains to every other major city of India like Delhi, Pune, Bangalore etc. This station is situated at a distance of 12 km from the city centre. Janam Bhoomi Express, Konark Express, Samta Express travel frequently to Visakhapatnam and are considered some of the best trains for Visakhapatnam.
