The town is small but still is one of the highly talked about places in the state of West Bengal. It is a town in the Bishnupur subdivision of Bankura district. The town is largely known for its terracotta temples, Baluchari sarees, Malla Shree Krishna Raslila and more. The place is a valuable historic town which has many temples and traces of history which dates back to the time of the Gupta period. Architecture, crafts, and culture are the main highlights of the place and make it an important tourist destination for people travelling to the state of West Bengal.

From the year 1997, the temples of Bishnupur is listed on the Tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. There is a lot to experience within the town which includes, classical, music, silk clothing, unique culture and extraordinary architecture. The significance of the place as a tourist destination makes it very convenient for people to access the town in the state of West Bengal.

Places to visit in Bishnupur

Rasmancha

This is one of the oldest brick temples which was commissioned by Malla King Bir Hambir in the year 1600 CE. Moreover, this temple also has one more inner chamber which houses the idols of Radha-Krishna.

Lalji Temple

The Lalji Temples are also known as the eka-ratna temple which was built in the year of 1658 by Bir Singha II himself. It is interesting to know that this place has been built on a square.

This laterite eka-ratna temple was built in 1658 by Bir Singha II of Malla dynasty on a square raised plinth which consists of ornamental stucco decorations on low relief carvings.

You can visit Madan Mohan Temple which was built by the Malla-King Durjana Singh Dev in the late 17th century. This place definitely has a great spiritual vibe and attracts a great number of people yearly.

Visit Biharinath Hill which is altogether an amazing piece of architecture. This place attracts a great number of people from all around. Moreover, this hill was also a spot for Jainism activities.

Visit Jyombarati which is basically a tourist village and is located in the Bankura district. This place is also known as the birthplace of Sree Sarada Devi. She is also worshipped as the Holy Mother by the followers of Sri Ramakrishna.

How to reach Bishnupur?

It is very close to the capital city of Bengal and is also well connected to other major cities of the state so as to confirm the ease of commuting and visiting nearby places. There are frequent buses which go and come from Bishnupur on a regular basis from many cities like Kolkata, Durgapur, Arambag etc. The nearest airport is in Kolkata which is only 140 km from the town.
